So I got an email from Time Warner saying that they made improvements to my area and have given me an upgrade in speed for free. I pay $54.95 out the door for 30Mb download and 5 Mb upload. I read the email and do a quick test from my PC that is a few rooms away and wireless
I then say woa... and click further. They have upgraded my service to 200Mb download and 20Mb upload. I'm told that my modem only supports 100Mb download which I never ever thought I would max out. Now I'm thinking of selling this one to twister for a discount off retail and bucking up to the 300Mb modem lol.

Why did Time Warner say that it maxes out at 100Mbps? The SBG6580 supports downloads up to 343Mbps across the WAN port. The integrated 802.11n WiFI chip supports downloads up to 300Mbps, and the LAN ports are 10/100/1000Mbps. www.surfboard.com/products/sbg6580/

agreed.. they state it's something beyond my ability to understand. sounded like the number of channels supported and the throughput for each channel making a total combined speed. to reach over 100mb of speed the modem needs to support more channels instead of just the rating for 300mb/s
does that make sense as I really don't understand that fully
I'm also not really worried about it as having over 80 down and over 10 up is more than I've ever had and honestly more than I would pay for if it came at a premium. When I signed up for my 30/5 speeds it was the lowest cost to get the 5mb upload which I considered worth the extra $10 to go from 2mb up to 5mb up. Now I'm doubled on both up/down for no extra cost. Once I have an idea if a "friend" wants the modem I'll go ahead and pick up the other modem. I know I can get $60 plus shipping on ebay if I sell it so there is no real issue one way or another.
Hard to not want that "free extra speed" even though I won't realize much of a difference for my current household usage.
On another note... From previous threads zahzoh has mentioned the zyxel powerline adapters for running internet through outlets. I mentioned to Whiskeyduck for his new home in PA and he's since purchased and installed them with great improvement over his wifi which was jittery to say the least.

The SBG6580 can bond 8 channels downstream and 4 upstream in a DOCSIS 3.0 environment. The throughput of each channel with the 256-QAM amplitude modulation scheme is 42.88Mbps (x8 = 343.04Mbps). It sounds like TWC is doing something different. What modem do they recommend?

Nice specs but no integrated WiFi, if that matters to you.

still working on if it's the way to go or not. I have some older wifi routers and the only devices I'll have on wifi are an Ipad, 2 kindles, an iphone, and an android phone.
Not sure how important the latest and greatest wifi "smart signal" blah blah is to me.
The netgear modem/router/wireless is just over $200.00

Man you are lucky. TWC has been horrible for me the past year. Thinking of switching to ATT Uverse before fall games release. It'll be cheaper also.

From my smartphone (I have flash disabled on all my browsers so the speedtest.net link won't work):
17.69 down, 2.13 up, 31ms ping. It's slower than Comcast but it's consistently more reliable, cheaper, and the few times I've had to call them the customer service has been fantastic. I'll take that over the nightmare that is Comcast any day.

I'll be the first to say that time Warner was abysmal inside erie city. The heavy residential area with to many subscribers really killed their network. Charlotte area seems much better. They started that the entire city is100% digital tv now which had reduced any required bandwidth allowing the large increase in speeds for no extra charge.
All that said if you have 5mb down and .75mb up that is consistent you should be able to game fine. That's what I had for years and the dsl connection was Rick solid and many gaming experience was as good as can be

So, I switched to ATT U-verse as Time Warner was dropping out all the time. Got more channels and faster internet for a lot less money! So far I'm happy with it. This is also from my laptop while watching HD TV...and it's 6:20 so probably high traffic time also. www.speedtest.net/result/4729786672.png

The one and only real downside I've found is that the great rate is just a 1 year promo rate. Once that expires, your bill jumps by something like 50%-75%. However, if you call them up, they can put you on another 1 year contract with the great promo rate again. The catch is that you have to bump up one of your services to the next higher level. Faster internet speed, more channels, or whatever. Basically this means an additional $5 or $10 on your monthly bill each year but the cable company does that to you anyway and with Uverse you get more service with the extra cost. Obviously you'll eventually run out of things to upgrade and end up stuck with the higher rate but by that time it may be feasible to drop TV and just pay for internet which is pretty cheap even without the promo pricing when compared with other companies. That's what I plan to do either next year or the year after.

Hey Darth, during my research I read an article from an ATT guy they gave instructions on how to get those rates after your 1 year promo expires...first get promo prices from other providers (this is important so you have something to quote them), then call and say you want to cancel and they will automatically send you to a "retention specialist" (remember that term). These guys have the authority to lower your bill or adjust things to match the competitors promo. These guys may have to "talk to their manager" but usually they'll get you what you want if you're nice. They'll also try to profile you (IE: this guy is savvy and hunting for a bargain, ect.)
I did this by accident because I called to cancel the phone landline before my install and they transferred me to a R.S. After I realized this I got him to knock off the $49 install fee and honor a $150 rewards card usually only offered if you sign up online (I was looking at their online promos)and got HD channels included if I signed up with him right then and there!

Nice, when it comes to gaming my belief is a solid and steady 6mb down and 1mb up are more than fine. The steady connection is where problems really show up.

All I can say is that I owe thanks to Darth (I think) and Erie for steering me towards the Zyxel Powerline adapters. My new house has overall terrible internet connectivity outside of the main hub / router for wireless, to where I could not even use my PS4 in the basement.
With the adapters, I went from a maybe 5 down and 1 or less up, with tons of inconsistency, to a stable 40 down and 5 up everywhere in the house. Super easy set up, and while I have to lose a plug in each room, I have near perfect connection for my internet that is supposed to be 50 down / 5 up. I have them placed in my office, basement, guest room, and an additional spare with no issues. Literally plug and play.
I have the newer version that our rated for 1200 up/down not that I expect to need 1.2 gigs of download anytime soon.... wait... VR maybe!!!!
