Suck it Nort Korea USA USA!!!!:
Sony Pictures has now officially announced its digital release plans for The Interview.
The comedy will be available for streaming rental in HD or $5.99 on Google Play, YouTube Movies, Microsoft’s Xbox Video and SeeTheInterview.com starting at 10 AM PT today. The Interview can also be purchased for $14.99.
Meanwhile, Variety reports that Netflix is also in talks to stream it.
The original report follows ...
Sony Pictures is reportedly finalizing its plans to both release The Interview online and in more domestic theaters.
CNN reports that YouTube is poised to close a deal with Sony to stream the controversial Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy. The deal is non-exclusive and YouTube viewers will pay to rent it.
"An earlier plan to rent The Interview through Apple's iTunes store broke down, according to two of the sources, but it could re-materialize sometime after Christmas," according to CNN. "Talks with YouTube and other potential partners have been going on for several days, but have been delayed by negotiations over financial terms and nagging questions about whether streaming the film will make digital distributors vulnerable to hacking."

I have zero interest in another mediocre Seth Rogen comedy. However it will be interesting to see if this direct-to-youtube release strategy will prove profitable enough for more studios to try this in the future with other films. It would be a certain poetic justice if, by refusing to play one holiday film, they inadvertently spark a technological revolution that drives a percentage of would be movie ticket buyers out of theaters and into online venues instead.
